Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series: Movie and Book Compare and Contrast

Percy Jackson & the Olympians

Percy Jackson is a normal boy who lives in upper Manhattan. Actually, he isn’t in many ways. He has ADHD, dyslexia, and got expelled from every school he attended. His mother always told him that his father was dead, and married a smelly person named Gabe Ugliano. His best friend is a boy named Grover, who always was the target of bullying. One day, in school field trip, he goes to Metropolitan Art museum. During the trip, his algebra teacher, Ms. Dodds, suddenly calls Percy for a conversation. However, during the ‘conversation,’ Ms. Dodds suddenly turns into a demon and tries to kill Percy.
Mr. Brunner, the Greek Mythology teacher, heard it and came. He advised Percy’s mother to a safe place; the Half-Blood Camp. Percy’s mother drove with Gabe’s Camaro, along the coastline. Percy also found out that his best friend, Grover, was a half goat. They find a hill, where there’s a pine tree. Just in front of it, Percy’s mother gets captured by the Minotaur, and dissolves. Being so angry about his mother’s death (he thought), he kills the Minotaur.
Tired and exhausted, Percy finds himself in the cabin, with some kind of liquid poured in to his mouth. It tasted like his mother’s chocolate chip cookies. It reminded him of his mother. When he is guided through the camp, he is surprised to find out that the Greek Gods were real. He must have also been a son of a god. He was assigned to Hermes cabin. It was the cabin that had the most people, since every undetermined half-blood was all assigned to Hermes’s cabin, who was the god of travelers. The counselor of the cabin was Luke Castellan, who was Hermes’s claimed son.
The next day, he plays in a sport called capture the flag. The flag of the other team was in the other side of forest. When he is resting under a tree, he finds the flag and tries to capture it. Just before taking the flag, Annabeth, a counselor from Athena’s cabin, attacks him. Percy gets injured so severely that he couldn’t even stand up. Instantly, a voice talks in his head that he should get to the water. When he touches the water, his wounds get all healed up and he gets power. He beats the opponent with skillful movements with his sword, and takes the flag.
Now, he was claimed as Poseidon’s son, the God of Sea. He was sent to Poseidon cabin. Mr. Brunner, who was actually a centaur named Chiron (the trainer of Jason and Heracles), explained about the reason Ms. Dodds attacked him. Zeus’s lightning bolt was missing. Zeus suspected Poseidon. So Zeus thought Percy was the thief; he had to bring the lightning bolt until summer solstice.
So Percy, Annabeth, and Grover go on a quest, trying to find the lightning bolt. They find out that Luke was a thief. They retrieved the bolt and headed to Olympus Mountain, which was 600th floor of Empire State Building. Olympus Mountain moves to the place where the major power was, and the place right now was Empire State Building. There, they meet 50-feet sized gigantic gods, who forgave them. Zeus also let Percy’s mother out of the underworld, who met the trio, but not saved because there were only 3 people who could get out).
The movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, was quite different from its book. The process was different; in the book, they go to the Pacific Ocean at the coast of California when they got the marbles, which were going to be used in order to get out of the Underworld. They had to travel around the country to get the three marbles. In the movie, Luke makes Percy a thief by hiding the bolt in his gift to Percy; the shield. However, in the book, Luke doesn’t. Also, in the book, Luke reveals himself as the servant of Kronos, while he doesn’t in the movie.
In the second book, the Sea of Monsters, Percy gets a chance to finish a whole school year without getting expelled. His best friend was Tyson, who was relatively enormous for a 7th grader. One period on the last day of school year was PE, where they played dodge ball along with the bully and his friends from Brooklyn. They were just visiting to see the school, since they were transferring here next year. Suddenly, the ‘friends suddenly turn into demons, who were there to kill Percy. They threw scorching cannon balls, which Percy dodged easily. The ball was heading straight to Tyson when Percy yelled a loud ‘no.’ Surprisingly, Tyson caught it with ease, threw the ball back at the demons, and took them down.
It was Annabeth who saved Percy. They were supposed to meet after school to watch a movie. Annabeth, Percy, and Tyson headed to Half-Blood Camp. There were 3 bronze bulls, fuming with hot smoke. Even with the reinforcements of the whole camp, they couldn’t defeat the bulls. Knowing that Tyson could beat them, Annabeth gives him the permission to come in. Like what he did in the gym class, he seemed to be okay, while touching extremely hot bronze bull.
Percy discovers that Tyson was a Cyclops; Cyclopes were one-eyed children of the gods. They were usually thrown off the Olympus Mountain, as Tyson was. They were good steelworkers; they made the Helm of Darkness for Hades, Thunderbolt for Zeus, and Trident for Poseidon. They were immune to fire.
Also, during the camp, Tyson was claimed as Poseidon’s son, too; he was Percy‘s half brother. He was angry at his father, having a Cyclops son. The whole camp was jeering at Percy, because he had a Cyclops half brother.
Every night, Percy dreamed of Grover, his satyr (half-human, half-goat) best friend. He was off to find Pan, the Lord of Wild. He disappeared after the war between Titans and Gods, with made the people to consider himself dead. However, being a nature lover, satyrs didn’t believe it; they went on quests to find Pan. For 2 millennia, many satyrs tried to find Pan. But nobody came back alive. Grover was trying to find Pan, too; now he was in danger. He was with a giant Cyclops, perhaps 10 feet tall. The Cyclops was confused, that Grover was a female Cyclops. Cyclops was trying to marry Grover, who he thought was a female Cyclops. Grover was sending messages to Percy through the empathy link between them.
This was a problem that a satyr was lost, but the major problem was that the camp’s borderline, the pine tree (which was Thalia Grace’s body, Zeus’s daughter) was poisoned. Percy told Annabeth, Chiron, and Tyson about the dreams. Clarisse was sent to accomplish the quest, which made Percy and Annabeth angry. Since Grover said in Percy’s dream that he was lured by the aura of power of the environment, Annabeth and Chiron assumed that whatever the source of the power was, it could heal the poisoned tree. So Annabeth, Tyson, and Percy got the permission to get out of the camp to join Clarisse with the quest.
When Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson get to the island, they discover Clarisse caught. Cyclops was planning to marry Grover, who was a female Cyclops in the Cyclops’s thought. They save Grover and Clarisse. With a Cyclops down, they also get the source of aura, the Golden Fleece. It was known to heal everything in environment near.
When Clarisse goes back to Camp Half-Blood with the Golden Fleece, the pine tree is healed perfectly. After a few days, something miracle happens. The Fleece worked too well, turning the pine tree back into Thalia.
In third book, Titan’s Curse, the camp was looking for reinforcements. Satyrs were sent all over the country. Grover, who was sent to a school in New Hampshire, said that he found two half-bloods. They had strong aura, like Thalia and Percy (who were the children of the Big Three, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades). Their names were Nico and Bianca di Angelo. At the end of the dance party, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover takes Nico and Bianca. It turned out, that Mr. Thorn, the principal, was a demon who looked for half bloods’ lives. They were saved by Goddess Artemis, the goddess of hunt. However, during the fight, Annabeth falls into the lake under the cliff. Bianca joined the Hunters and Nico was taken to the camp.
Artemis, who sensed danger all the way in the West, left to hunt the demon. Meanwhile, the Hunters would stay in Camp Half-Blood. Percy dreamed the night when Hunters came. Annabeth and Artemis were taken somewhere by someone. Luke was there, too. Artemis and Annabeth were kidnapped by the army of Kronos.
             When Percy told Chiron about it, he said that Hunters and half bloods had to go on a quest in order to save Artemis. When Zoe, the lieutenant of Artemis, went to the attic of the Big House to listen to the Oracle, it said;
Five shall go west to the goddess in chains,
One shall be lost in the land without rain,
The bane of Olympus shows the trail,
Campers and Hunters combined prevail,
The Titan’s curse must one withstand,
And one shall perish by a parent’s hand.

Chiron decided to put 3 Hunters and 2 campers for the quest. Zoe picked 2 Hunters and herself; the team from Hunters was Zoe, Bianca, and Phoebe. When it was the campers’ turn, Grover, who was Artemis’s big fan (because she was a nature lover), volunteered. Thalia joined; now there was no spot for Percy to be in the quest. But Zoe said that no male hero could come, and Grover wasn’t technically a boy because he was a satyr. So it was decided that Zoe, Phoebe (the best tracker in the Hunters), Bianca, Grover, and Thalia was going to go on the quest, which depressed Percy. Partly, he wanted to save Annabeth himself, and he wanted to be proved as a hero once more.
Although he was not to go, Percy snuck out of the camp and followed the white van, which headed west. He was with his Pegasus Blackjack. When they reached D.C., where Bianca and Nico lived, they stopped and rested. Blackjack, the Pegasus, headed back to camp due to his extreme exhaustion. Zoe, Phoebe, Bianca, Thalia, and Grover went in the Smithsonian Air&Space Museum. Percy felt something strange and followed it. He ended up in Natural History Museum, where there was a huge set of T-Rex bones displayed. There were Luke, the mortal security guards, and somebody that called himself the general of Titans. He took teeth from T-Rex and planted the teeth. Then he poured some kind of liquid into the ground. Skeleton Warriors appeared.
Percy ran into the Smithsonian to let the five children know. They were happily touring, when a Nemean Lion appeared in the museum. It was huge. Percy killed the lion, by tricking the lion.
Zoe eventually accepted Percy in the quest. They headed west together, now 6 children (Zoe was actually over 2 millennia years old). During the trip, they find the junkyard of the gods, in New Mexico. Bianca lost her life, trying to save the children’s lives. Luckily, the other children survived, but Bianca was dead. They got to San Francisco, where there was Mountain of Despair. It once was a place where Titans ruled the world, but now it was ruined. At the top of the mountain, they find Atlas (the general of the Titans), Annabeth, and Artemis; Artemis was struggling under the weight of the sky.
At the peak of the mountain, they fight each other. Percy slipped the sky over Atlas, who groaned in pain. When they cheered with several high-fives, they discover Zoe down, who had a severe injury on her side. It was told by Zoe herself, that she was Atlas’s daughter. It was her father’s final blow that killed her. Artemis turned Zoe into a constellation. Artemis teleported to the Olympus safely and thanked the heroes and Hunter. She was just in time for the Winter Solstice. Winter the Council Meeting of the Gods. Thalia also joined the Hunters. Although the heroes and Hunters saved Artemis, it was proved, that the Titans were rising.
In the fourth book, the Battle of the Labyrinth, Percy and Annabeth, while playing a sport in the forest, notices a cave where they never have been. They reported to Chiron, who said that it was an entrance of the labyrinth of Daedalus. Recently, Kronos’s army tried to use the labyrinth to invade the camp. The camp would be in a great danger if Kronos’s army found out. They were now assigned a quest to suppress them from using the labyrinth.
Annabeth was to lead the quest, who brought Percy, Grover, and Tyson with her. They tried to find Daedalus’s workshop, which they failed. They realize that the mortals who could see through the mist could lead them through the labyrinth. Percy took Rachel Elizabeth Dare, who he met last year during the quest in Hoover Dam.
When they are led into the workshop of Daedalus, they learn that Quintus, who was Chiron’s assistant when Dionysus was away, was Daedalus. Quintus meant fifth in Latin, and Quintus was Daedalus’s 5th body.
When Percy and Annabeth (Tyson and Grover were separated from them, since Grover sensed Pan’s aura and went followed) are led to Mount St. Helens, which was to grant Hephaestus’s favor, Percy gets lost. Annabeth escaped safely back into the labyrinth, but St. Helens explodes; Percy is shot away. He lands in Ogygia, where Calypso was. Calypso healed Percy and sent him back to Camp Half-Blood.
When Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood, they were in middle of a funeral of Percy, who was alive. They celebrate. However, there was not much time left. Luke and Kronos’s army were going to attack the camp. When they did, the camp safely defended and was now safe; but now they had to get ready for the bigger war.
